Events Participated by NWGN-STL in 2010
NWGN-STL believes in collaborating with various
organizations to accomplish its mission. As such, we participated
in the following events in 2010:
Mitrata Trivia Night (April 2010) –
NWGN-STL sponsored a table at the Mitrata Trivia Night.
It was agreat event and we had a group of enthusiastic
supporters representing NWGN-STL.
NWGN Conference “Looking Back, Moving
Forward : Gender, Culture and
Power” (July 2010) –NWGN-STL participated
in this conference held at the University of Scranton,
Pennsylvania. NWGN holds a bi-annual conference
to generate a dialogue on issues pertaining to women
of Nepali origin, and to create an arena for discussion
between scholars, practitioners, and activists from
all over the globe, who focus on Nepal and Nepali
women’s issues. Mandira Sharma, the Executive
Director of Advocacy Forum Nepal was the keynote speaker.
Ms. Sharma played an instrumental role in defending
the rights of Nepali women caught in the civil war and
has won several national and international awards
including 2006 Human Rights Defender of the Year Award, presented
by Human Rights Watch in New York. She was also one
of the main characters featured in the award winning
documentary The Sari Soldiers. Dignitaries, including
the Nepali Ambassador to the United States Ambassador
Shankar P. Sharma, and the Nepali Ambassador the United
Nations Gyan Chandra Acharya were also be in attendance.
NWGN-STL was represented in the conference by
its president Ms. Arati Maleku and vice-president and
treasurer Ms. Rachana Shrestha. Ms. Maleku participated
in the conference by presenting on starting and
sustaining chapters of organizations and Ms. Shrestha
presented a situation analysis on widowhood in
Nepal.
Francis Howell North Craft Fair (Nov 2010)
– NWGN-STL had a booth for hand-made ear-rings
at the craft fair. Though the competition was tough,
we managed to raise funds to cover cost and earn some profits.
It was heart-warming to see people from different walks
of life support our endeavors to help the women
and children in Nepal.
Mitrata Nepal Mouse Race and Marketplace Event
(Dec 2010) – NWGN-STL had a jewelry booth
forthis event. 40% of the events proceeds were donated
to Mitrata Nepal.
